What is Tempering in Diablo IV?

Tempering is a Blacksmith system that adds an extra affix on top of an item's rolled affixes. Legendary items only — Mythics and Uniques cannot be tempered. You apply Temper Manuals (recipes) that contain 3-5 possible affixes; one is randomly rolled each time. Each item has 2 tempering slots with 5 reroll charges each.

How do I get Temper Manuals?

Temper Manuals drop from Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons, The Pit, World Bosses, and general endgame content. Manuals come in Magic/Rare/Legendary rarities — higher rarity = better affix pool. Manuals are class-bound when discovered.

What happens when I run out of reroll charges?

When a tempering slot hits 0 charges, the slot is 'bricked' — you cannot change the affix or temper the slot again. Spend a Scroll of Restoration to reset all charges on the item. Scrolls are rare — max 3 per day from the Tree of Whispers.

Tempering lets you add a bonus affix on top of your Legendary gear — often the build-defining difference between functional and meta. The tension: every temper reroll costs a charge, and when charges hit zero, the slot is bricked forever without a rare Scroll of Restoration. Disciplined tempering means only pushing charges on items you've already committed to keeping.

Discipline Rules

◆ Never temper below Level 60 — gear churn is too high
◆ Never temper a low-roll Legendary — pump the GA pieces only
◆ Build a GA-first gear set, then temper the whole set
◆ Reserve Scrolls of Restoration for 4-GA chase items only
◆ Use Rare-pool manuals on finished pieces (smaller pool = better odds)
◆ Accept a "good enough" temper on secondary slots — don’t burn charges chasing perfect

Scrolls of Restoration

Scrolls of Restoration reset all tempering charges on an item back to full. Max 3 per day from the Tree of Whispers, with occasional drops from high-tier content. They stack. Save them for your true BiS pieces — don't waste a Scroll on gear you'll replace in a week.
